Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is a protein found in the blood that provides protection to the lungs from the damage and diseases (like emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)) caused by activated enzymes. The Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Quantitative Blood Test (AAT) is used to measure the level of AAT in blood. It can also be utilized to identify abnormal forms of AAT an individual has inherited from parents, to help diagnose alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. An individual inherited two copies of the gene that helps make AAT (one from father and one from mother). if mutation takes place i.e., change in one or both copies of this gene, it leads to two situations

 ●    If one has two mutated copies of the gene, it means changes in both the copies of this gene, then one may have a condition called AAT deficiency. People with this deficiency/disorder are at higher risk of getting lung disease/damage before the age of 40 (1).

●     If one has only one mutated AAT gene, it means changes in one of the copies of this gene, then such people become the carriers of AAT deficiency. This means one may not have the condition but could pass the mutated gene on to their children.
