Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced in the liver of a developing baby. Its levels are usually high when the baby is born and it greatly decreases by the age of 1. Healthy adults should have very low levels of AFP.
AFP is a type of tumor marker. Tumor markers are certain molecules in the bloodstream whose values are higher in case a person has certain cancer(s). Elevated levels of AFP are found in people with one of the most common types of liver cancer called hepatocellular carcinoma and in a rare type of liver cancer called hepatoblastoma that occurs most commonly in infants. It can also be found in some people with cancers of the testicles or ovaries. AFP levels can be chronically increased in case of liver diseases, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis. The AFP tumor marker blood test may also be utilized to monitor the cancer treatment effectiveness and to observe the recurrence of cancer after the finished treatment.
