Alpha Galactose (Gal) Allergy Test measures IgE antibodies which can help to determine if a person may have an allergic reaction to red meat.  The Alpha-Gal Panel includes specific meat allergen tests as well as a test for galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal).  The alpha galactose (gal) allergy IgE blood test panel basically includes:
·         Galactose-Alpha-1,3-Galactose (Alpha-Gal) IgE
·         Beef IgE Allergy
·         Pork IgE Allergy
·         Lamb IgE Allergy
Alpha-gal is a carbohydrate particle present in most red meat, which includes beef, lamb, and pork.  Not like most food allergies, alpha-gal may not cause a reaction until hours after the meat has been consumed.  This is because carbohydrates take longer to be absorbed by the body than the proteins that cause most allergic reactions, so the onset of symptoms can be delayed.
This test is usually ordered when a person experience symptom(s) such as
·         nausea
·         headache
·         runny nose or congestion
·         sneezing hives
·         diarrhea
·         abdominal pain
·         shortness of breath
after eating meat.   The symptoms may appear quickly or over a period of several hours.
