Amphetamines blood test is used to measure the levels of amphetamine (a type of drug) in your blood. Amphetamines describe the drug class that includes both amphetamine and methamphetamine. This drug is a central nervous system stimulant and causes a reaction of increased energy and alertness, over productiveness, and then exhaustion and tiredness as its effects get over. The two drugs amphetamine and methamphetamine are usually mistakenly considered as the same drug, but there are differences and they are discussed below.
Amphetamine is a stimulant and an appetite suppressant that includes a variety of stimulant drugs that stimulate the central nervous system and lead to increased energy levels. Few examples of amphetamines include Adderall, Dexedrine, Methylin, and Ritalin. Amphetamines can be prescribed to treat specific medical conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or narcolepsy. The signs and symptoms of someone taking an amphetamine include restlessness, tremors, faster heart rate, confusion, panic, and seizures. Though amphetamines have some legitimate medical uses, yet it is categorized as a Schedule II drug, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and addiction. So wherever possible, the doctors prefer other treatment methods over Amphetamine.
Methamphetamine or more commonly called “Meth”, crystal, crank, and ice is a dangerous drug that can be taken orally, smoked, snorted, swallowed, or injected. Meth is chemically like amphetamines but far more dangerous. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Methamphetamine is more potent than amphetamines. A small amount of methamphetamine can cause augmented physical activity, reduced appetite, increased respiration, irregular heartbeat, and augmented blood pressure. Repetitive usage of methamphetamine may lead to insomnia, anxiety, weight loss, severe dental problems (referred to as “meth mouth”), and addiction. At similar doses, much more of it gets to the brain and thus the harm it will do to the central nervous system is more damaging and long-lasting.
The amphetamines blood test may be ordered by your doctor if you show symptoms of an amphetamine drug overdose, the test may also be utilized by employers to screen the applicants and to help discourage drug use in the workplace.
