The antistreptolysin O (ASO) test is a sensitive blood test used to check for the antibodies made by the body as a response to a toxin known as Streptolysin O (causing strep infection). The toxic enzyme Streptolysin O is produced by the group of bacteria called group A Streptococcus. When the body comes in contact with harmful bacteria/ other foreign substances, the body produces antibodies to defend itself against these external invaders. ASO is one of the numerous antibodies that is made by the immune system of the body in response to a strep infection caused by group A Streptococcus. These bacteria are responsible for causing a variety of infections like strep throat (bacterial infection causing inflammation and pain in the throat), infections, skin infections (like pyoderma, impetigo, cellulitis). In almost all cases, it is easier to get rid of strep infections with the strategy of thorough identification of the infection and then treating it with antibiotics. But if left untreated may cause serious medical conditions (like rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis, a type of kidney disease). The ASO blood test is ordered if the doctor suspects the symptoms of the current illness to be related to an ailment caused by a previous strep infection. It is ordered when the signs and symptoms of infection emerge, typically in the weeks following a strep throat or skin infection when the bacteria no longer exist in the throat or on the skin.
