This Bilirubin total, blood test measures the amount of a substance called bilirubin in the blood. The test is usually ordered when someone has the signs and symptoms of liver disease and is utilized for the differentiation of hepatic (liver) disorders. Bilirubin is a waste product that comes from the body’s normal process of breaking down heme and is orange-yellow. Heme is a constituent of hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells (RBCs). A healthy and sound liver normally gets rid of bilirubin. But if someone has liver problems, bilirubin can build up in the body to unhealthy levels.
Your doctor may order this test if you have signs and symptoms of liver damage or disease which includes:
● Jaundice (Yellowish skin or eyes)
● Abdomen pain
● Dark-colored urine
● Nausea/vomiting
● Fatigue and general sickness that often accompanies the chronic liver disease
The bilirubin levels may also be tested regularly if one is treated for liver disease.
Please do not exercise prior to testing. It is best that your blood is taken in a rested state.
