Cystatin C is a protein that is produced by the cells in your body. When kidneys are working well, they keep the level of cystatin C in your blood just right. When your kidneys are healthy and working properly, they filter cystatin C out of the blood so it can be excreted in your urine. Cystatin C is a good marker of renal function. Serum concentrations of Cystatin C are almost totally dependent on glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The rate at which the filtrate fluid is formed is called the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which...

The rate at which the filtrate fluid is formed is called the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is an important factor that determines how well the kidney functions. Since Cystatin C is formed at a constant rate and freely filtered by the kidneys, its serum concentration is inversely correlated with the glomerular filtration rate (GFR); i.e., a high concentration indicates a low GFR, while a lower concentration indicates a higher GFR. When the kidneys are functioning normally, the concentration of cystatin C in the blood is stable, but as kidney function deteriorates, the concentration begins to rise. This increase occurs as the GFR falls and is usually detectable before a person has any symptoms of kidney disease. Your healthcare provider can use this test to see how well your kidneys are working.
