HSV-2, also known as Herpes type 2, is mainly transmitted through sexual contact (with genital surfaces) and skin-to-skin contact with someone infected with the virus. In rare circumstances, HSV-2 infection can also be transmitted from a mother to her new-born baby during delivery, leading to neonatal herpes. HSV-2, also known as Herpes type 2, is widespread throughout the world and is the leading cause of genital herpes. Genital herpes is a contagious sexually transmitted disease that is mainly caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2), and in some cases, by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1).
Herpes causes outbreaks of sores or blisters on different body parts. Of the two types of HSV infections, HSV type 2 is less common. However, HSV type 2 causes the most severe symptoms, such as blisters and sores on the genitals or rectal areas. Therefore, HSV type 2 is commonly referred to as genital herpes. This test screens for Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 2 by measuring the IgG antibodies that are usually produced within four to twelve weeks of infection and provides confirmatory testing on low positive HSV type 2 results.

Index Interpretation
<0.90 Negative
0.90-1.09 Equivocal
>1.09 Positive

This assay utilizes recombinant type-specific antigens to differentiate HSV-1 from HSV-2 infections. A index positive result cannot distinguish between recent and past infection. If recent HSV infection is suspected but the results are negative or equivocal, the assay should be repeated in 4-6 weeks. The performance index characteristics of the assay have not been established for pediatric populations, immunocompromised patients, or neonatal screening.
