Herpes is a common viral infection that is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). The virus exists in two forms: Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 causes oral and genital herpes, whereas HSV-2 causes genital herpes.HSV-1 is usually transmitted through oral contact and can result in cold sores or fever blisters in or around the mouth. In rare cases, it can also be transmitted through oral-genital contact and cause lesions or infection in or around the genital area. On the other hand, HSV-2 is transmitted through...

In rare cases, it can also be transmitted through oral-genital contact and cause lesions or infection in or around the genital area. On the other hand, HSV-2 is transmitted through genital-to-genital contact during sex, leading to skin infections, sores, and blisters in the genitals or anal region.
Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (IgG), with Reflex to HSV-2 Inhibition test is used to Detect IgG antibodies specific to HSV types 1 and/or 2 infections. It is used to confirm or rule out possible infection with herpes simplex types 1 and/or 2 virus in prenatal patients in whom HSV 2 infection can cause serious prenatal disease. The performance of this assay has not been established for use in a pediatric population, for neonatal screening, or for testing of immunocompromised patients.
Please do not exercise prior to testing. It is best that your blood is taken in a rested state.
Note: Turn around times on results are an estimate and are not guaranteed. The lab may need additional time due to holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, etc. You can contact us to discuss when your results should be ready and we will contact the lab on your behalf immediately.
Index | Interpretation |
<0.90 | Negative |
0.90-1.09 | Equivocal |
>1.09 | Positive |
This assay utilizes recombinant type-specific antigens to differentiate HSV-1 from HSV-2 infections. A index positive result cannot distinguish between recent and past infection. If recent HSV infection is suspected but the results are negative or equivocal, the assay should be repeated in 4-6 weeks. The performance index characteristics of the assay have not been established for pediatric populations, immunocompromised patients, or neonatal screening.
